Police Department - Traffic

Hit and Run Crashes

The traffic officer is responsible for the follow up investigation of hit and run crashes. All hit and run crashes are reviewed by the traffic officer and are investigated based on the severity or seriousness of the crashes. What this means is that a hit and run crash that involved personal injury will be investigated before a hit and crash that involved only property damage.

Also keep in mind that not all hit and run crashes can be solved. Most of the time the victim in these cases did not see who struck their vehicle or were able to see who struck their vehicle but were unable to give the police enough information needed to locate the offending vehicle and/or offender.

If you are involved in a hit and run automobile crash:

  • First check for injuries. If someone is injured call 911.
  • Be sure that any of your actions at the scene of the crash do not jeopardize the safety of you, your passenger, other motorists or pedestrians.
  • Attempt to record a description of the offending vehicle.
    • License Plate Number and State
    • Color, Year, Make and Model.
    • The gender and race of the driver and or/occupants.
    • The last know direction of travel.
    • Any damage on the offending vehicle.
