Water Restrictions
As we continue our efforts to conserve water the Village of North Aurora has amended its "Water Conservation Ordinance
#06-05-22-04 dated May 22, 2006. Under this recently amended ordinance. All citizens are allowed to water everyday between the hours of 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Individuals that do not comply with the provisions of the Water Conservation Ordinance will be subject to fines.
The ordinance was originally formulated to decrease stress on our water system during peak demand periods, i.e. late spring through summer. Water conservation guidelines carry benefit to both Village residents and Village staff. With water conservation measures in place, Village staff are better able to monitor and remedy situations where individuals are wasting our community's water. The time window for allowable watering is considered to be ideal for Village residents due to lower evaporation rates and less burn-off during established watering hours.
Another important fact for residents to consider is the relatively small amount of water required to maintain an established lawn. An average sized North Aurora lawn covers between 10,000 and 14,000 square feet. This lawn size requires approximately 7,200 gallons of water per week in order to maintain lawn stability/health. If that homeowners continuously waters everyday through the specified watering time window 6 p.m. - 9 p.m, that person will have covered his/her lawn with the recommended amount of water in less than five days.
| Ex. |
500 gallons per hour discharge (two sprinklers)
10,000 - 14,000 square foot lawn
7,200 gallons of water required weekly to cover lawn with 1"
3 hours per day/every day per watering restrictions |
| So: |
1,500 gallons per day x 7 days = 10,500 gallons per week |
The above example is an "at least estimate". This means that the homeowner examined at putting at least 10,500 gallons of water a week on his/her lawn. This 10,500 gallons a week rate the recommended level of 7,200 gallons per week for a healthy lawn. In closing, I would like to reiterate that water is not an endless resource and we all need to do our part in conserving. The entire Village must work together to achieve sustainability. Thank you for your conservation efforts!
